Assertiveness →
Responsiveness →
The widest gap of the four. You are slow, precise, and task-focused. They are fast, broad, and people-focused. Handled badly this becomes mutual dismissal. Handled well it is one of the strongest pairings on a team, because they generate options you would never surface and you catch the ones that will not survive contact with reality.
Where friction shows up
They think out loud, and you hear a commitment. They float five ideas in a meeting, you evaluate all five in detail, and they have already moved on. Your detailed pushback reads to them as negativity rather than diligence. Their enthusiasm reads to you as unseriousness.
What to do differently
- Distinguish brainstorming from deciding, and ask which one you are in.
- Respond to the idea before you respond to the flaws. "I like where this goes. Here's what it has to clear."
- Compress. Three bullets, not three pages. They will ask if they want more.
- Get the commitment written down at the end of the conversation, because their memory of what was agreed will be more optimistic than yours.
What not to do
Do not correct them in public on small things. Do not lead with risk.
One line to remember
Yes-and first, then the constraints.
