You will get the best work of anyone on the team out of this person, but only if you stop treating their pace as an obstacle.

Where friction shows up

You ask a question expecting an answer and get a request for time. You interpret that as hedging. It is not. They will not commit to something they cannot defend, and their reluctance is the same instinct that makes them the person who catches the flaw nobody else caught.

What to do differently

  • Give them the question in advance. An Analytical asked cold in a meeting will give you a worse answer than the same person given a day.
  • Tell them what level of confidence you actually need. "Rough and fast is fine here" is genuinely useful information they cannot infer.
  • Explain the reasoning behind the decision, not just the decision. They comply with logic, not with authority.
  • When you override them, say why. Otherwise they stop bringing you objections at all, which is the expensive outcome.

What not to do

Do not rush them in public. Do not dismiss the detail as noise without hearing what it is.

One line to remember

Send the question early, name the confidence level you need.
